Armenia must become our pan-national nucleus

With this interview, it’s our joy to present the great patriot and benefactor Vahe Karapetian’s personal history, philanthropic work, and exuberantly proactive world view.

-Mr. Karapetian, while reading your book, The Will of the Armenian, I was gripped equally by your story and literary talent. Could you give us a brief overview of your family’s history?

-Thank you. I guess I should start with the story of my mother, which has had a profound influence on me in terms of shaping my national consciousness, patriotism, and awareness of our demands for justice. Her story continues to resonate in me with as much intensity as ever, as I keep hearing her voice and feel the pain of the difficult days she has seen.
My mother was born in the Bursa region. Like the 1.5 million Armenians who were victimized by the Genocide, she and her family were subjected to the barbarism of the Ottoman Turks, including starvation and pillage. My grandmother perished on the deportation route. The family did not have a chance to bury her body. At some point during the death march of the Armenian caravan, when my grandfather and his six children were left dazed and hungry, local Turks gave them some food but in exchange took my mother away. My grandfather was so broken, physically and spiritually, that he didn’t even resist giving up his daughter, probably judging that she would be better off living with a Turkish family. Perhaps he was right. The Turkish family adopted, fed, and raised my mother, thus saving her from the horrors of the deportation and the Genocide. True, the Turkish family did not give my mother any of the privileges which the other children of the household enjoyed — she didn’t receive an education and had to fill her days with housework — but she wasn’t mistreated either.
Four years later, in 1919, my mother escaped with the help of Armenian Evangelists, who had been searching for and rescuing Armenian children enslaved or adopted by Turkish families. Subsequently she was adopted by the family of Nshan Der-Ghazarian. Although her adoptive family took good care of my mother, she was once again treated as a foster child and was given heavy housework. Yet again, she felt like an outsider, and her dream of receiving an education remained unfulfilled. Nonetheless, my mother was humbly satisfied with whatever she had, and always said in her prayers, “Lord, I’m grateful for my life.”
My mother’s name was changed once again. Now she was called Azniv. She moved with the Der-Ghazarians to Cyprus, and on to Beirut, where, in 1928, at the age of 17, she married my father.
My father was born in 1893, in the old Cilician city of Tarson (Tarsus). Although he didn’t like talking about his past, I often asked him about it. In 1913, when he was 20 years old, he graduated from a local college, the Saint Paul Institute, and went to work for the local police department. During the Genocide, the police chief urged my father to leave Tarsus with his family, as he knew massacres awaited the Armenian community.
My father and his family moved to Damascus, where he joined the colonial French army as a translator, since he was fluent in English, French, German, Turkish, and Arabic. Unfortunately my father was injured while trying to stop a brawl between Armenian and French soldiers. An Armenian soldier inadvertently shot him in the leg. It was a flesh wound. But it was misdiagnosed and my father received the wrong treatment, as a consequence of which a gangrene developed and the doctors had no choice but to amputate his leg. So my father, at 28, was disabled — a turn of events that changed the course of his life. He started to work at his brother-in-law’s leather factory. After getting married some years later, my parents had six children: three daughters and three sons.
They had a hard life. In 1946, they moved to Armenia. I was five years old at the time. In the homeland, too, it was extremely difficult to make a decent living, especially for a man with a physical disability like my father. At first, he was given a good job at a leather factory, but he was ignored once he taught his craft to his colleagues. In order to make ends meet, he began to work at home, making and restoring leather goods, but the Soviet authorities did not tolerate this and put him in jail. My mother sold all of our scant possessions to try to get him out of prison, but to no avail. My father died shortly afterwards.
I was raised in Armenia. I received my higher education at Yerevan’s Polytechnic Institute. I worked during the day, went to college at night. My sisters were married in Armenia. As for my mother, my younger brother, and myself, we moved to Baku in 1965, intent on eventually leaving the Soviet Union. In 1967, we traveled first to France, and then to Beirut. In 1968, we moved permanently to the United States.

We all need the foresight of an eagle and the strength of a lion, as symbolized by our coat of arms. Let us transform the diaspora into the engine and instrument of change for the homeland.

-Was it easy to settle down and live in the United States?

-Nothing is easy. One must invest all of one’s energies for every little success, which is what I’ve done. In 1968, I met a Jewish entrepreneur who was, first and foremost, a wonderful man. He appreciated my talent and ambitions, and gave me work. He manufactured air-conditioning systems. At once we became friends. Some time later, I established my own business, and my employer once again gave me his support. During 1969 and 1970, I began to experiment with converting pickup trucks into lunch trucks. (Today lunch trucks are ubiquitous throughout the United States). After toiling day and night on my engineering experimentations, I reached success and at last was able to give my mother a life of comfort. She had suffered so deeply and for so long that giving her a measure of happiness was my greatest joy.

-As you were building a new life in the United States, what were your feelings with regard to your Armenian identity and the Armenian homeland?

-I have always been conscious of my roots. I never forgot about my people while I was building a new life in America. In fact, I was constantly aware of where I had come from and focused my attention on my community. When you become a United States citizen, you’re told that if you don’t preserve you ethnic traditions and customs, if you don’t carry on as a good son of your nation, you’ll never become a good American. I strongly believe in this statement and was very touched when I first heard it.
So I’ve never felt any pressure to give up my cultural background. On the contrary, I’ve felt encouraged to aim for a level of success that would give me the ability to support my Armenian homeland, where the blood of my ancestors has been shed. It’s impossible to describe that call of the blood. One must feel it. It is a sorrow, a wound, which does not heal. It merely becomes more tolerable whenever you’re able to help the homeland, by lifting a family or a child from a life of tragic privation, for instance. I’m proud to be an Armenian and for supporting my homeland.

Dedicating my time to my nation means ensuring the future of our generations. Let the sacrifices we make not seem great, for they will certainly bear fruit.

-Mr. Karapetian, you were born by a miracle, by the grace of God… Can you tell us that story?

-I wasn’t supposed to be born. My father had to choose between my life and my mother’s. Since he couldn’t leave the rest of his children without a mother, he naturally chose her life over mine. So during childbirth, they took me out of my mother’s womb and put me aside, believing I was a stillborn, and concentrated on reviving my mother. Well, when my mother felt better, she and the nurses were utterly shocked to hear me screech. It was my turn to receive their care.
I was meant to live. I had a mission to fulfill, and it’s with its awareness that I’ve lived and continue to live these 75 years…

-What do you consider to be the starting point of your philanthropic work? How did it all come about?

-In 1974, when I already had found success as an entrepreneur, I began to contribute to community efforts of building a school and a church in Hollywood. I helped initiate the construction of the St. Garabed Church as well as the four-story campus of Rose and Alex Pilibos Armenian School, which can accommodate 850 students.
In the decades since, I have provided support for a diverse range of projects and programs in the diaspora, Armenia, and Artsakh. I supported the creation of the Armenian Chair at UCLA and the Institute of Armenian Studies at USC. My godfathership of Holy Martyrs’ Church in Kashatagh (Lachin) is of enormous significance to me. The church is dedicated to 42 martyred warriors. Their names are engraved on commemorative slabs on the grounds of the church. During one of my earliest visits to Artsakh, when I noticed that the Goris-Stepanakert Highway required major improvements, I asked the president to allow me to go ahead and implement them. Through a road-construction company that I launched in 2002, I funded the refurbishment of the highway, and, ever since that time, have secured its regular maintenance. Afterwards I supported the construction of the Sos-Amaras and North-South highways. I’m very fond of Amaras, because it’s the site of one of the first schools founded by Mesrop Mashtots. The Sos-Amaras Highway is of enormous strategic and political significance, and I’m as ever grateful to the people of Amaras for protecting the borders of our homeland. Two other Artsakh projects I’m very proud to have supported are the establishment of the Voices of Artsakh children’s choir and its Los Angeles tour in 2005.
Recognizing the great importance of Armenia’s law-enforcement establishment, I have donated half a million dollars’ worth of vehicles and equipment to the Police Department of the republic.
I regularly participate in the annual Telethons of the Hayastan All-Armenian Fund with major contributions.
In the United States and Armenia alike, I have founded several pubic organizations dedicated to fostering Armenian national consciousness.
Finally, despite my busy schedule, I have created and continue to host the Batsahaytum weekly public-affairs television program in Los Angeles. The program introduces outstanding national figures to the Armenian-American community and serves as a platform for analyzing a diverse range of national issues.

I have always believed in the power of altruism and the need for such institutions.

-You have also supported several social-assistance programs. Recently you were in Gyumri. Can you tell us about the purpose of your visit?

-On September 18, I visited Gyumri, where we presented new apartments to three homeless families. That day, the families received the surprise of their lives as they were presented with the keys to their new, fully furnished homes. They used to live in damp, crumbling, rat-infested domiks, grappling with terrible, inhuman conditions. For the first time in decades, those families are now living in comfort and with dignity, and I’m extremely happy for them.
It’s interesting that when we wished to talk to the kids at their domiks, they avoided approaching and chatting with us. But a mere hour later, when they were taken to their new, beautiful apartments, suddenly they changed. They were full of joy and quite friendly. Those moments were very touching and I will never forget them.
As part of the Gyumri housing project, which is implemented by Shant TV of Los Angeles and the Hayastan All-Armenian Fund, I have also provided full funding for those children’s high-school as well as university education.

-On September 24, you attended the opening ceremony of the AGBU Vahe Karapetian Center in Yerevan. How did the idea of establishing this center originate?

-I have always believed in the power of altruism and the need for such institutions.
The Armenian General Benevolent Union, founded in Cairo in 1906, is the diaspora’s oldest pan-national organization. Its founder, Boghos Nubar Pasha, was led by the motto “unity is strength.” With 145 branches in 30 countries, regional councils, young professionals’ associations, cultural centers, schools, offices, a yearly budget of $36 million, and, particularly, its vast experience in national work, the AGBU today is the diaspora’s largest pan-Armenian organization. Its special projects, sponsored by its benefactors and designed for various social and age groups, have benefited hundreds of thousands of people and helped create an average of over 2,000 jobs annually. Since its creation over a century ago, the AGBU has spent close to $1 billion to address the various needs of the Armenian people. Of that amount, $130 million have been spent on Armenia projects.
Through these latter projects, more than 500 diaspora youths visit the homeland every year. They include scientists, musicians, teachers, athletes, and arts groups. In the past, diasporans who visited Armenia to participate in AGBU projects stayed at various hotels and residences. So we sought to create an environment in Yerevan where young visitors from the diaspora could feel more at home and bond with one another. In 2014, I donated the newly constructed building of the Vahe Karapetian Center to the AGBU. The planning, design, and construction of the center, which has a total area of 5,500 square meters and features breathtaking marble interiors, took 12 years of hard work on the part of Veronica and me. Although we had resolved to donate the center to a worthy organization, we weren’t sure as to the ideal candidate. Ultimately we chose the AGBU, and it was the right decision.
The center is already hosting our youth groups and students, who enjoy its complement of modern comforts and amenities. These comprise great rooms featuring all necessary furnishings and fully equipped kitchens, as well as laundry facilities. In short, one can find everything here to mix practicality and fun during summer projects. The center hosts young AGBU members from throughout the world, functioning not only as a residence hall, but a venue for diverse cultural and social events. Visiting youths stay at the center for periods of between 10 and 15 days, and, by interacting with one another and participating in various cultural and social activities, gain a broader appreciation for their roots, national values, and traditions. My wish is that these young people truly enjoy their homeland and desire to visit it often, and even to move there.
The opening ceremony of the center was also attended by President Serzh Sargsyan, who was fascinated by the structure’s exterior and interior alike, including the elegant columns and the gorgeously designed marble floor of the lobby.
The first level of the building has been assigned for Syrian-Armenian refugees, as I wished to do my part in helping ease their plight.
The dream that I cherish the most is that each one of us contribute to our shared goal of turning our promised land, Armenia, into our pan-national nucleus. A most significant first step toward that goal was taken this year, with the ceremony of blessing the Holy Chrism, the Myuron. For the first time in the past 600 years, the Catholicos of the See of Cilicia came to Armenia to mix the Cilician Myuron with the Myuron of Echmiadzin. I’m very proud of our President, who initiated this wonderful milestone, thereby helping further strengthen the bond between our two Catholicosates.

-In 2015, on the occasion of the centenary of the Armenian Genocide, President Sargsyan presented you with a medal, in recognition of your longtime service to the homeland. Were you expecting to receive such an award? What other accolades have you received in the past?

-The President’s gesture was a pleasant surprise. I was the sponsor of the centenary commemoration at the Tsitsernakaberd Memorial Complex. I considered it extremely important to support the event, because I’m a son of Genocide survivors and much of my extended family was massacred.
The President has also bestowed on me the Medal of Honor of the Republic of Armenia, in 2011. I was the 42nd individual since 1991 to receive that honor. My other awards include the Prince of Cilicia Medal of Honor; the Grigor Lusavorich Medal, conferred on me by the government of Artsakh; the Gold Medal of Armenia’s Ministry of Diaspora; and the Armenian Ministry of Internal Affairs’ Medal for Strengthening Cooperation. I was the first diaspora Armenian to receive the latter honor. Finally, on May 9, 2015, I received the prestigious Ellis Island Medal of Honor, in recognition of outstanding contributions to American life and the quest for freedom.

My dream and goal are that national consciousness will be an ever-burning reality in every Armenian, without exception. Is this an impossible dream? I don’t think so. Anything is possible if there is a harmony of forward thinking and organized action. And I’m not alone in this conviction.

-What are some of your latest plans?

-My plans pertain to expanded business relations. For instance, I very much would like to create manufacturing partnerships with entities in the Caucasus region, to establish a production facility in Armenia, and to strengthen commercial ties with Russia and Iran. Right now all this is still in the conceptual stage, but I’m absolutely prepared to support my homeland through the business sphere as well.

-What do you feel when you’re in Armenia?

-I’m often asked this question. Whenever I’m in Armenia, I feel my roots, I feel like I’m walking on firm ground. Perhaps there are more luxuries in other countries, but you feel like you’re suspended in thin air. This is only natural, because our homeland is not merely about borders and a territory, but a land that was made fertile by our ancestors and painted with the blood of our heroes.

-Why did you decide to implement development projects in Artsakh as well?

-We must keep Artsakh vibrant because it’s the beacon of our people, our nation’s first child to acquire independence. We lost Nakhijevan. The same could’ve happened to Artsakh. But its people clung to its land and never relinquished it. I have always been profoundly moved by this phenomenon, which has prompted me to undertake various assistance projects. I think Armenians must move to Artsakh, not leave it.

-Can you tell us a bit about your present family life?

-I have a marvelous Armenian familys. I have a delightful wife. children, grandchildren. All of my children are married.
I am very happy to have been able to instill a strong sense of patriotism and national values in my children, and to give them an Armenian education. My grandchildren likewise attend Armenian schools.
My wife is Armenian. She was born in Rumania in 1958. She moved first to Lebanon, then to the United States. One of her teachers was Levon Baljian, the future Catholicos Vazgen I. My wife is also a great patriot. We share the same goals and aspirations, which have bonded us for the past 35 years. We have a happy life, and hope that our children will follow in our footsteps. My wife has been trying to convince me that we should have longer stays in Armenia, spending a few months out of the year here. I like the idea!

Human beings shape their own destinies, but God must grant them luck to pull it off. To me, luck means being healthy and having a life untouched by tragedies.

-What, would you say, is the overarching message that you’ve received from your parents and which you’ve transmitted to your own children?

-Homeland! I grew up savoring the homeland through the stories of my parents, by hearing my mother tearfully sing “Cilicia,” and watching my father read the Bible. At first, I didn’t know what the homeland meant. I used to mock my father’s patriotism, but was also moved by it. My feelings of patriotism developed in me at an early age, and deepened in the course of my life abroad. This is one reason that, as the sponsor of the construction of the Armenian church in Hollywood, I was privileged to name it St. Garabed Armenian Apostolic Church, in honor of my grandfather.

-Luck, destiny, or God: which do you think is the most decisive factor in human life?

-Human beings shape their own destinies, but God must grant them luck to pull it off. To me, luck means being healthy and having a life untouched by tragedies. So if we’re endowed with luck, we can build a wonderful future, provided we work with utmost diligence toward its realization and believe in our God-given potential. In God rests the power of the universe, and every movement in our lives, every possible endeavor, depends on God’s will. By believing in the power of God, by remaining loyal to our Christian faith, we are filled with the energy of the universe. Otherwise we would be akin to an empty box. And, incidentally, one doesn’t need to be a religious zealot to be at peace with the universe and oneself.

-What do you think are the core characteristics which a human being must possess?

-Modesty, hard work, faith, kindness, patience, and compassion, all led by the following idea:
“If not I for myself,
Then who for myself?
But if only I for myself, Then what am I?
And if not now,
Then when?”

-I would’ve married Veronica the first time around.
Also, I would not have made a certain mistake in Russa, as a result of which I lost a great opportunity to become one of the world’s richest people. Had I been able to acquire that level of wealth, I could’ve done much more for my homeland, helping it become one of the most advanced nations of the world. To me, the most important values are my family and the larger family of my nation, and whatever I do for both is too little.
